COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS is Proud to Partner with South Mecklenburg High School, Dr. Furr and the SMHS PTSA
in Support of the Students and School Community

The mission of Communities In Schools (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg is part of the national Communities In Schools network, one of the nation’s leading dropout prevention organizations.
What We Do
CIS core programming at South Mecklenburg High School includes: monitoring for attendance, academics, and behavior; tutoring and mentoring resources; school supplies, dental and vision screenings; physical and mental health referrals; career exploration and college access/advisement; leadership, cultural, and experiential activities and parent engagement events.
What we do at South Meck is very different than some other schools. Our mission is slightly more mainstream, working as student advocates to the entire school body on an as needed basis and providing additional support to the counselors. We do work directly with more than 225 students providing enrichment, posts secondary advisement and guidance. The demographics of the CIS student is extremely varied. Some only needing enrichment and college help, others with more intensive support. It is not limited to a certain GPA, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. At some point in every high school student's life they encounter a stumbling block that might need an outsider to assist. On a whole school level, we are part of the team that coordinates the school college and career fairs, college application week, FAFSA night among many other initiatives.
CIS-Charlotte also has programs that specifically target “first generation” students to attend college; teen mothers balancing the challenges of childcare and high school graduation; and youthful offenders needing support to continue their education. By understanding the strengths as well as the needs of our students and forming partnerships with, businesses, civic groups, faith communities, human service agencies and individual volunteers, CIS connects students and families to the resources and relationships they need to be successful in school and in life.
